The Buddhist Association of Cambodia (acronym BAC) is a first humanitarian non-profit association, non-participant organization with any political parties, impartial sects of the clergy. It was born 1952 by the initiative of the most supreme patriarch Chuon Nath under the support and highest honorary presidency of His Majesty, the most revere King Norodom Sihanouk and the Royal Government of Cambodia to serve the supreme interests of national society and the state’s Buddhism by reinforcing Buddhist education in the country and giving the scholarship to the monk students to continue their higher level studies abroad and to participate in providing assistance to the poor people as well as to propagate the Buddhism, culture, literature and take care of good national traditions and identity. After 17th of April 1975, the activities and existence of Buddhist Association of Cambodia were completely finished.
Being mindful to the useful achievements to the national society, Buddhism and the intellectual values of our ancestors who have created BAC and with the intention to rebuild and reinforce their high ideal, for developing Buddhism and national society, that monks and a group of Buddhists unanimously joint together to draw up new by-law to be used as guiding documents for Buddhist Association under the leadership of a provisional Board of Directors. This Board has received the Highest Appreciation of His Majesty the most revere King Norodom Sihanouk and Her Majesty the Queen to be highest honorary President of our Association in 1994. It has also received high appreciation fromSamdech Chea Sim, the President of National Senate, Samdech Krompreah Norodom Ranarith, the President of National Assembly and Samdech Hun Sen the Prime Minster of Kingdom of Cambodia by accepting to be the honorary members of our Association. The BAC’s Board of Directors has been instituted by the first BAC’s General Assembly taken place on 4 April 2001, at which time, many monks of two Sects, lay dignitaries, and intellectuals, performed their spiritual deeds according to the traditional ways of national society under the leadership’s principles of the national unity and reconciliation of father-like His Majesty the King and the mother-like Her Majesty the Queen in conformity with the culture of Peace policy guideline of Royal Government is currently carrying out.
The BAC’s secretariat is located provisionally inside the Ministry of Cults and Religions in Phnom Penh and the BAC’s branch Committees situated in the monasteries and Buddhist institutions across the country. The rebirth of the BAC’s is a good symbol not only to open the ways to contact with The World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB), but it is also the principal gate bringing both Cambodia society and Buddhism to participate easily in the activities of world Buddhism or the International arena of Buddhism. It is for these reasons that, I would like to appeal to Samdech Prince, Princess, Excellencies, Lok Oknha, ladies, gentlemen, foreign and Cambodian people, both monks and laymen, both inside and outside the country to support compassionately the Buddhist Association of Cambodia as an individual or as a legal entity member, thereby you could donate to the Association’s budget in kind and materials so as to assist enable it to carry out its tasks in upholding and developing the Buddhism, being State’s religion and national society according to its purpose with success.
